Birger lived with seven other dogs for years with a hoarder and was severely neglected there.
When they were rescued and taken to the Portuguese shelter, they were scared and malnourished.
Of all the dogs, Birger needed the most time to trust people again, but little by little he dared to wag his tail, ask for cuddles, and even walk on a leash.
Fortunately, Birger was able to come to the Netherlands in September 2025, where his forever host family welcomed him with open arms.
For Birger, it was a big transition from the safe, familiar shelter to the unknown Netherlands. Everything was quite overwhelming during that first period!
Fortunately, his host family was prepared for this and gave Birger all the space and time he needed to adjust to his new life.
It was two steps forward and one step back with Birger.
But in the end, Birger had enough trust to let his new family scratch under his chin and enjoy the attention they gave him.
Dat Birger op zijn eigen tempo stapjes vooruit maakt blijft heel bijzonder om te zien. Waar eerst de achtertuin al heel spannend was, rent hij daar nu vrolijk en ontspannen in rond en geniet hij van lekker dollen met de andere hond in het gezin, Bartje.
