Castrations

Together with MARKdierenarts, we help address the stray dog problem at its root through neutering.

Castrations by MARKdierenarts

The best way to save a million dogs? By castrating one.

Do the math with me. Suppose a (street) dog has one litter per year for eight years, with an average of 6 puppies per litter, half male and half female. Then she would bring 48 dogs into the world over her lifetime, 24 of which are females. These 24 females would each also produce an average of 48 puppies (24×48=1152). Half of these (576) would also have 48 puppies. After three generations, we’re already at 576×48=27,648. Add the original 48 and the 1152 that were already there, and that’s 28,848! 14,424 of them would also have 48 puppies…

Fifteen million dogs
Then after just four generations there are already over six hundred thousand dogs! And after five generations more than fifteen million. The best way to tackle the dog surplus is to make sure they aren't born.

Puppies in the trash can
In Portugal, it is unfortunately still not very common for people to neuter their dogs. Many people also let their dogs roam the streets during the day. If a female dog then has puppies, they are sometimes thrown into a trash bin, left somewhere on the street, or given away to anyone who wants them. Many of these puppies end up back on the street. After all, a fluffy puppy is cute for the children, but a teenager that ruins your interior is less desirable.

To prevent this animal suffering and to raise awareness, the shelter organizes together with MARKdierenarts an annual castration project. The entire veterinary team takes their vacation days and rolls up their sleeves for a week. MARK veterinarian covers the cost of the trip, their accommodation, surgical materials, and medication themselves. This way, they really make a difference.

"Like a well-oiled machine, the MARKdierenarts team works all day long. In a week, they castrate an average of about 150 animals. On their flip-flops and in shorts. '24 more stray cats on the way!' it sounds through the hallway." – Flin Itz
