Disease prevention

In the two Portuguese shelters we support, each houses an average of 120 dogs. Without proper preventative care, they are at high risk of serious Mediterranean diseases such as leishmania, ehrlichia, and heartworm, as well as outbreaks of parvovirus, distemper, and rabies.
These diseases are painful, often incurable or even deadly, and very expensive to treat. Read more here about Mediterranean diseases.

The local government only pays for food, water, and the salaries of staff who clean the kennels. All medical care must be fully funded through donations. This is why the disease prevention project was set up. Thanks to this program, dogs receive the protection they need; they are vaccinated, dewormed, and protected against ticks, fleas, and mosquitoes that transmit diseases such as leishmaniasis, ehrlichiosis, and heartworm. In this way, diseases that are difficult to cure, chronic, or even fatal are prevented.

It is extremely important to keep the dogs healthy. Healthy dogs are happier, less expensive, less susceptible to other diseases, and have a higher chance of being adopted.

For just €50 per year, one dog can be fully protected.
